Paintings trashed in a panic

"PARIS Five stolen masterpieces including a Matisse and a Picasso worth almost C$140 million ended up in a street garbage bin in Paris and were likely crushed by a garbage truck, a suspect has reportedly told police.

French police officially placed three suspects — the alleged cat burglar and two accomplices — under investigation last month for the record-breaking May 2010 heist at Paris’s Museum of Modern Art.

According to police sources cited by Le Journal du Dimanche, one of the alleged accomplices, a watchmaker identified only as Jonathan B., told detectives that when the other two men were initially arrested in May he “panicked and destroyed the canvasses before throwing them into a rubbish bin.”
