The Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, N.Y., introduced the distinct day that it would be sending a significantly integral twentieth century painting to the auction block, it was once as soon as apparent that museum officers have been involved — and per chance higher than a little embarrassed — by way of the inexcusable go they had been about to make.

Like naughty childhood hoping the grown-ups wouldn’t observe tiny fingers dipping into the cookie jar, they dropped the lovely press launch into the media black hole that is Labor Day weekend.

Jackson Pollock’s 1946 “Red Composition,” only his 2nd test with the groundbreaking drip approach that would show to be a post-World War II watershed for artwork internationally, has been in the Everson's collection for almost 30 years. The $18 million public sale estimate nearly barring a doubt capability that the small painting will disappear from the public realm, vanishing into non-public hands.

Xu Beihong painting sold for 42 million

"An auction in Beijing sold a Xu Beihong painting for 266.8 million yuan (42 million U.S. Dollars) on Monday, smashing previous world records for the father of modern Chinese painting.

The traditional Chinese painting, which portrays three farmers cultivating their land with an ox, achieved the highest-ever bid after a fierce bidding war that started at a set price of 150 million yuan.

The previous top price for a work by Xu, who died in 1953 and is best known for his ink painting of horses, was 171 million yuan.

The record-setting painting, which measures 150 by 250 cm, was completed in 1951, his largest work after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949."
